Taiwan Sugar Museum.

The sugar museum (台灣糖業博物館) was definitely the highlight of our Kaohsiung trip for me – it used to be so inaccessible before the metro started service but now it’s just a short walk from MRT Ciaotou Sugar Refinery Station. The locals love to visit this old sugar refinery turned museum for a “rustic experience” but, really, it is so much more than that. We went on a quiet Thursday with almost no other visitors and standing inside the abandoned refinery, I was drowning in the silence of a prominent past that has faded so completely with time. I used the Lomo LC-A+ for the pictures I took inside the refinery on redscale film – some of which I’m really excited to share with you in the next post.

Biscuit & Rabbit Cafe Tea Rooms.

Excellent coffee (I had two, if that’s any indication for you) and the prettiest bar area I’ve seen in a cafe. The coziness of this place is one of a kind – the kind that feels like we were lazing an afternoon away in a friend’s home over books and the chugs of sewing machines.

FLORET Room of Handmade Stuff.

I knew that we were headed for a cute handmade cafe when I suggested to Evelyn that we visit FLORET in Kaohsiung but the truth is, it turned out to be pretty much the dream shop, ever.

This wonderful space tucked in a quiet lane is a handmade shop (FLORET Room of Handmade Stuff) and cafe (Biscuit & Rabbit Cafe Tea Rooms) rolled in one. Pictures of the cafe will come right up in tomorrow’s post but will you first look at the crazy messy sewing room they have at the back of the shop? I don’t use uppercase often but WHAT A DREAM.

The incredibly sad thing is that they’ve recently announced the closing of the Kaohsiung shop to focus on another venture that will bring them back to Taipei. It’s a shame that this happy place in Kaohsiung will cease to exist but I’m just going to count my lucky stars that we got to go for the first last time.

Backpacker41 in Kaohsiung.

Our only criteria for accommodation in Kaohsiung was that it had to be pretty and Backpacker41 pretty much fits the that bill. The cozy building is located on number 41 of Siwei 3rd Road (hence the name) and extremely near the metro. The hostel is run by a mother/daughter team and let’s just say their sweet attentiveness and brilliant travel advice made our little trip more fruitful that we had expected.

Girl With Camera.
