Beach Vacation at Qixingtan, Hualien / Part I.

This time last month, my friends and I decided to take a much needed beach vacation in the eastern part of Taiwan. Like all dramatic holiday stories, Super Typhoon Nanmadol hit our island the day before we were set for the beach. There was some serious debate on whether it was worth it to reschedule but we finally decided that as long as our train to Hualien was not going to be canceled the next morning, we would go forth with the plan even it meant staying indoors watching the huge waves from our hotel room balcony.

Let me tell you, people, that when you decide to have a vacation, do it with such determination that nothing will stand in your way. That is exactly what happened to us. The typhoon was supposed to be at its peak throughout our holiday but our lucky stars came and turned it the other way. We had the coolest breeze and minimal rain (occasionally too sunny to keep our eyes wide open), which is the best kind of post-typhoon weather you can get.

I’ve got some more pictures to share but I’ll start with the view from (and of) our room.

Random Things.

One of the things I really enjoy about film photography is forgetting completely what pictures you’ve taken until you get them back in your hands, especially the individual random things that just happen to find their way into your camera.

Pet Shop.

These were taken at a pet shop in the train station before I boarded my train to Taichung. I wasn’t really big on animals growing up (in fact, I was mostly afraid of them) but I can see their appeal now, especially the companionship they offer. The last picture is probably my favorite even though I inaccurately focused on stuffed dog on the left, just look at their nearly identical sleeping postitions!

We all need a little time alone.

Nothing feels more laid-back than a good book in your hands over coffee. Now that I don’t read as much as I used to (or should), I’ve found that I’d rather re-read books I know for sure are good instead of venturing onto unknown territories. It’s hard being adventurous with books these days because I do so little of it, I want every second to count. That being said, I bought the hugely popular The Help last weekend and I’m absolutely savoring it.

Walking in Green Boots.

I don’t think I have introduced you to my new favorite shoes, have I? These vintage hunter green boots have been mine for about a month now and they’re my absolute favorite things to walk in. They fit perfectly and go with every pair of my crazy color tights. I would have blogged about them sooner but I really wanted their pictures taken with film so here they are, late but cute!
